Stefanie M. Perez (formerly Smith) has 13 years of experience working in Cultural Resource Management. Stefanie is a Registered Professional Archaeologist (RPA) and has experience in historic and Precontact archaeology, project coordination and data management, and extensive experience in the analysis of faunal remains from Precontact and historic contexts. Stefanie is a certified Middle Grades educator and has additional experience designing and implementing in-person and virtual educational experience for use in public outreach for archaeology. Stefanie has worked on projects in Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Mississippi, Texas, Kansas, and Florida. Stefanie has conducted fieldwork, faunal analysis, and research for a number of government and private clients including the National Park Service and various telecommunications service providers.

Zooarchaeologist. Completed zooarchaeological analysis of faunal remains collected during Phase I/II excavations on Cumberland Island, GA. Faunal material was collected from shovel tests and test units across two adjacent multi-component sites. Work was conducted for New South Associates, Inc.
Zooarchaeologist. Completed zooarchaeological analysis of faunal remains collected during data recovery excavations at Redstone Arsenal (1MA840) in Madison County, Alabama. Faunal material was recovered from feature and non-feature contexts across three distinct activity areas. Stefanie co-authored the report. Work was conducted for USACE, Mobile District.
2023
Zooarchaeologist. Completed zooarchaeological analysis of faunal remains collected during data recovery excavations at the Barnesfield Plantation Site (44KG0171) in King George County, Virginia which included 24,429 bone and shell fragments with a combined weight of 30,372.46 grams. Stefanie also authored the report. The analyzed material was recovered from 51 distinct cultural features and surrounding nonfeature contexts. Work conducted for Johnson, Miriam & Thompson (JMT).
2022
Zooarchaeologist. Completed zooarchaeological analysis of faunal remains collected during a Phase I Cultural Resources survey of a parcel on St. Helena Island and Pine Island in Beaufort County, South Carolina. Faunal material was recovered in varying amounts from two individual sites: 38BU931 and 38BU2357. Within the boundaries of 38BU931, faunal material was collected from seven loci. Stefanie co-authored report. Work was conducted for Pine Island GC, LLC.
2021
Zooarchaeologist. Phase II of site 8HI14528 at MacDill AFB, Tampa, Florida. Stefanie was responsible for completing in-field faunal identification and data collection at two concentrations of oyster shell. Through this analysis, Stefanie was able to provide data on formation processes that supported the hypothesis outlined by the Principal Investigator on the project.
Education Coordinator. Assisted in the organization and implementation of virtual Archaeology Month. Stefanie assisted Anne Dorland with additions and expansions to the virtual platform that was developed in 2020.
2020
Education Coordinator. Organization and implementation of Virtual Archaeology Month. New South’s annual Archaeology Day activities responded to the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic by creating a virtual platform with interactive resources and standards-aligned activities for school-aged and adult participants. Stefanie worked with Anne Dorland, also an education coordinator, to build the virtual platform and involve other archaeologists in public outreach activities focused on long-term public engagement.
Zooarchaeologist. Data Recovery of site 9DU286, Albany, Georgia. Stefanie was responsible for completing faunal identification and quantitative analysis on all recovered faunal remains from the archaeological data recovery of a 19th and 20th century urban archaeological site. Results of this analysis were compared to those of similar urban historical sites across the state of Georgia. Work conducted for the Georgia Department of Transportation on behalf of Niles Bolton Associates.
Zooarchaeologist. Data Recovery of Historic Warwicktowne, Newport News, Virginia. Stefanie was responsible for completing faunal identification and quantitative analysis on all recovered faunal remains from the archaeological data recovery of a historic port town having its origins in the late seventeenth century. Work conducted for the City of Newport News, Virginia.
2019
Zooarchaeologist. Data Recovery of Tomochichi Courthouse, Savannah, Georgia. Stefanie was responsible for completing faunal identification and quantitative analysis on all recovered faunal remains from the 18th century occupation of an urban archaeological site in historic downtown Savannah. Results of this analysis were directly compared to those of the adjacent Telfair Site. Work conducted for the General Services Administration on behalf of Hoar Construction, LLC.
2018
Zooarchaeologist. Phase I Survey of 2,297.79 Acres within MacDill Air Force Base in Hillsborough County, Florida. Stefanie was responsible for completing faunal identification and quantitative analysis on all recovered faunal remains. This faunal analysis contributed to a reversal of a previous not-eligible recommendation for one of the identified archaeological sites on the MacDill property. Work completed for MacDill AFB Cultural Resources Management.
Zooarchaeologist. Archaeological Investigations at the Bell Site (40RE1) Roane County, Tennessee. Stefanie was responsible for completing faunal identification and quantitative analysis on all faunal remains recovered during these investigations. The analysis provided insight into the relationship between humans and animals at the site. Work completed for the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA).
Zooarchaeologist. Tomlinson Inn Site Faunal Analysis of Phase II material from Garrett County, Maryland. Stefanie was responsible for completing faunal identification and quantitative analysis on all faunal remains and providing a comparison of the assemblage to others from similar time periods and geographic locations. Work completed for TRC.
2017
Zooarchaeologist. Data Recovery Excavation at the Riverlights Development in New Hanover County, North Carolina. Stefanie was responsible for completing the faunal identification and quantitative analysis on the substantial Riverlights assemblage. The faunal data from this project was later included in a paper given at the 2016 SEAC Meeting in Athens, GA. Work completed for Newland Communities.
Zooarchaeologist. Addendum to previous Dover Bridge faunal analysis. Stefanie was responsible for completing the faunal identification and analysis of faunal material collected during a supplementary excavation. This data was compiled in an addendum and compared against previous zooarchaeological findings from the site. Work completed for TRC.
Archaeologist/Field Director. Third Addendum to the Phase I Archaeological Survey and Phase II Testing of Old Alabama Road Corridor. Stefanie was responsible for leading the additional survey and Phase II investigation of easements, remnant parcels, and previously recorded archaeological sites within the project corridor along with a small crew of archaeological field technicians. Work completed for GDOT.
Archaeologist/Field Director. Phase I archaeological survey of proposed replacement of bridge in Bulloch County, GA. Stefanie was responsible for directing a small crew of archaeological field technicians through the Phase I survey of the area surrounding an existing bridge over Caney Branch. Work completed for ARCADIS.
Archaeologist/Field Director. Phase I Survey and Phase II Testing of the Southern Nuclear Operating Company’s Proposed Site in Stewart County, Georgia. Over the course of two months, Stefanie was responsible for running an archaeological field crew and leading survey and testing of numerous areas and previously recorded archaeological sites.

Archaeologist/Field Director. Phase Ia Reconnaissance Survey of the Proposed GA 400 MARTA Extension Corridor through North Fulton County, Georgia. As archaeologist and field director, Stefanie led the archaeological fieldwork, which consisted of reconnaissance survey of a 13-mile corridor and seven proposed station locations. Work completed for Parsons-Brinkerhoff.

Zooarchaeologist. Phase III Data Recovery Excavations at Platt Mount (8BR244) and Faunal Analysis of Existing Collections from Elder Mound (8BR245), Three Forks Marsh Conservation Area. Ms. Smith served as lead zooarchaeologist, completing and directing faunal identification and statistical analysis on faunal material recovered from Platt Mound and additional, previously recovered faunal material from Elder Mound. Work completed for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
Archaeologist/Field Director. Phase I Archaeological Survey of Battlefield Parkway Multi-Purpose Trail Extension in the City of Fort Oglethorpe, Catoosa County, Georgia. As field director, Stefanie led the Phase I subsurface testing and metal detector survey along the proposed 4,654-foot trail extension. Work completed for ARCADIS.
Archaeologist/Field Director. Phase I Archaeological Survey of Fifteen Intersections in Walton County, Georgia. The project consisted of a Phase I Archaeological Survey in preparation for intersection upgrades at fifteen separate intersections. Stefanie was responsible for leading this fieldwork. Work completed for Atkins North America.
Archaeological Field Technician. Phase 1 Archaeological Survey of 10 NCDOT Bridges in Anson, Stanly, Union, and Cabarrus counties. Work consisted of Phase 1 survey surrounding 10 existing bridge locations in preparation for bridge replacement/expansion activities. Stefanie was responsible for excavating shovel tests at 15m intervals. Work completed for North Carolina Department of Transportation.
Archaeologist. Phase I Archaeological Survey of Tilley Quarry Waste Site, Bartow County, Georgia. As archaeologist, Stefanie worked with a field director to complete the Phase I subsurface testing of a 15.6-acre tract of undeveloped land. Stefanie was responsible for excavating shovel tests at 30m intervals and project reporting. Work completed for Parsons-Brinkerhoff.
2014
Project Manager/Archaeologist. Cultural Resources Survey of numerous telecommunications tower locations throughout the U.S. Each location required Phase I subsurface testing and view shed analysis. As project manager and archaeologist, Stefanie was responsible for project planning, research, fieldwork, and reporting. Work completed for the Federal Communications Commission.
2013
Field Technician. Phase I Archaeological Survey of large scale pipeline corridor in southern New Hampshire. Stefanie worked on a crew of technicians and was responsible for excavation and documentation of her findings.
2009
Visitor Use Assistant. Fort Pulaski National Monument. Stefanie was responsible for providing visitors with information about the park, providing daily tours and musket demonstrations, and ensuring that visitors adhered to the safety guidelines of the park.
2008
Maintenance and Preservation Crew Member. Fort Pulaski National Monument. Stefanie worked on a small crew and was responsible for the maintenance of the park grounds as well as the preservation needs of the park including historic masonry work in a damaged area of the fort.
